Transform Your Meditation With a Beginners Mind

If your mind is empty, it is always ready for anything, it is open to everything. In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert's mind there are few.
Shunryu Suzuki

When we have a beginners mind we are open, we have a willingness to engage without expectation. This means we want to learn and try it out. This very approach, of holding a beginners mind is what enables us to experience the benefits of Meditation.

Today in Meditation I realised that I wasn't able to move into a deeper state because I was expecting to have the experiences I had the day before.

After becoming aware of this I chose to bring my awareness back to the present moment. I let go of the expectation. By doing this I was able to bring all my attention to one point. And when I did this I found that I began to experience an elevated state. I began to naturally go deeper into Meditation.

Approach your Meditation with a beginners mind.

So the point of this is that we need to let go of our expectations. The pre-existing ideas and wishes of how our Meditation should be. This means being OK with whatever happens. Knowing that sometimes there are more thoughts that will be present than other times. And understanding that the benefits come in ways we don't expect. This letting go allows us to to be in the present moment. And this is where a greater experience resides.

Here is a short video by the company Headspace which explains the benefits of a beginners mind when it comes to Meditation.
